The Society for Army Historical Research is delighted to announce that Professor Richard Holmes has been awarded the Templer Medal for his outstanding work, Soldiers: Army Lives and Loyalties from Redcoats to Dusty Warriors.

Professor Holmes' social history of the British army, which takes its reader from the civil war through to the present day, makes an important contribution to questions of military continuity and change whilst always maintaining a focus on the individual soldier as well as grand narrative.

Sadly, Professor Holmes died in 2011 aged 65, after suffering from cancer. The prize was therefore presented to his wife, Katharine Saxton, and their two daughters, by HRH, the Duke of Kent.
